10 Video Games That Will Cause a Storm of Emotions
These projects will make you sincerely worry about the fate of the characters and will not let go until the very end.
Games have long ceased to be simple sets of levels with various obstacles, in which the plot is present only for show. Game designers and screenwriters have learned to use the power of the engines to the fullest to evoke a full range of experiences in players. Below are 10 projects in which this is noticeable to the naked eye.
1. This War of Mine
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, iOS, Android.
The game, inspired by the siege of Sarajevo that began in 1992, shows the hostilities from the point of view of defenseless citizens. Events unfold in a bombed-out city, and your goal is to live as long as possible.
You will now and then send your group in search of supplies, because of which you will have to constantly make a choice. Sneaking past patrollers, putting your life in danger, or trying to offer them food and medicine in exchange for the opportunity to go further is up to you.
Your hideout can be attacked, and if you try to kill someone, the character may well develop depression. You will have to face such problems very often, and every day will almost always seem like the last.
2. Firewatch
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One.
A series of unpleasant events leads Henry to the wild forests of Wyoming. He will have to work on the tower and make sure that there is no fire anywhere.
Locations, made in orange tones, evoke sadness, and the thoughts of the protagonist are not the most cheerful. To plunge into loneliness, he is not allowed by Delil’s partner, whose voice constantly comes from the radio.
You can choose the tone of the answers, which can affect the relationship of the characters. And all this is intertwined with events, the end of which you will digest for a long time.
3. The Walking Dead: Season 1
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, iOS, Android.
This interactive film is set in the Walking Dead universe, but its story is much more personal than in the comics and TV series. The project for five episodes tells about a prisoner named Lee, to whom the invasion of the living dead gives a chance to escape. He finds a defenseless girl, Clementine, and they decide to stick together. The couple will meet many characters on their way, but it is the actions of the main characters that will more than once make you think about human relations and let out a miserly (or not so) tear.
Among other things, the project is full of tense moments, during which you need to press buttons in time, high-quality dialogues and complex moral decisions.
4. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One.
The game tells the story of a girl named Senua, who goes to the world of the dead to save the soul of a dead lover. Because of her mental illness, the heroine does not understand what is real around her, and what is the product of her inner fears and conflicts.
To create realistic auditory hallucinations, which play an important role in the narrative, the developers used the method of binaural sound recording. Thanks to this, the maximum effect of immersion is created: the voices come from different sides, and Senua’s madness is transmitted extremely believably. Therefore, without headphones, it is better not to take on Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.
5. Gone Home
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One.
After a whole year of absence, Caitlin returns to her home. But instead of a family greeting her with open arms, she discovers a note in which her sister apologizes for past transgressions. The heroine begins to explore the mansion, looking into every nook and cranny, inspecting familiar objects and listening to audio recordings to understand what happened.
There is no intense action in Gone Home, but there are many strong moments of a personal nature. This is not horror at all, but the atmosphere in the house is sad and ominous: now and then you expect that the ghost of the past will jump out of the unlit closet on you.
6. INSIDE
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, iOS.
In this dystopian platformer, you play as a boy who makes his way through industrial buildings, trying not to catch anyone’s eye. You do not know from what and where you are running, but you are sure of one thing: one wrong step – and death awaits you.
In the INSIDE universe, scientists have created a technology that allows you to enslave the mind of people. Most of the puzzles are built on this – fascinating and moderately complex. Although there is a place for attempts to circle the fingers of dogs running from all sides, and moments when you need to accurately calculate the time, so as not to be demolished by a giant device of unknown purpose.
The game has a pressing atmosphere, from which the boy is trying with all his might to escape. What awaits him ahead will not leave anyone indifferent.
7. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, iOS, Android.
Two brothers leave their native village and go on a long journey to find a cure for their dying father. Along the way, they will encounter many dangers and help more than one living creature.
The gameplay is built on the constant interaction of the characters. Solve puzzles and overcome obstacles, they have to do together. At the same time, each of the brothers needs to be managed separately.
Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons is a fabulous, but often sad story, in which behind the many gameplay elements lies the desire of the developers to show the full power of human kinship.
8. That Dragon, Cancer
Platforms: PC, iOS.
This is a true story about the struggle of the son of developers Ryan and Amy Green with a deadly disease. At the age of 12 months, Joel was diagnosed with cancer, which he and his parents fought unsuccessfully for four years.
The game, made in the genre of the quest, will allow you to experience the sad and joyful moments of family life. With its interactive capabilities and immersive effect, That Dragon, Cancer captures green’s experiences in a way that no film can.
9. The Last of Us
Platform: PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4.
The project tells about a man and a girl who together confront a world full of zombies and bad people. The main character needs to protect his ward at all costs. And if at first their relationship is full of distrust and is built solely on profit, then over time everything becomes completely different.
The scene almost at the very beginning of The Last of Us is one of the best examples of acting in the world of interactive entertainment. But there are plenty of other touching and emotionally challenging moments in the project. The finale of the game will definitely make you look forward to the release of the second part.
10. To the Moon
Platforms: PC, iOS, Android.
The project tells the story of two scientists who use special technology to rewrite people’s memories. So, terminally ill patients go to the afterlife, thinking that they have realized their dream.
You will go through a considerable segment of the life of Johnny, one of these people, and learn that his irresistible desire to fly to the moon is not at all as simple as it may seem.
In The Moon, there are no realistic graphics – it looks as simple as possible. But there is an incomparable script, excellent humor and music that does not let go from the very first minutes of the game.
